TOEFL vs IELTS: What they are and why they matter

TOEFL VS IELTS – Studying, working, and living abroad are everyone’s dreams. Either you’re planning to  take your degrees or to work abroad, you are required to take a standardized English test. There are two popular tests that are usually required in the international applications, namely  the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  and the International English Language Testing System ( IELTS).

However, even though both of these tests are to determine your English skills by testing the writing, reading, speaking, and listening aspects, these two are completely different to each other.

What is TOEFL

In Indonesia, we are more familiar to TOEFL, since it has been around longer. It is an English proficiency test developed by American institution, focusing on the proficiency of American English. It is used as the standard English requirement in over than 900 institutions in about 130 countries. There are several versions of TOEFL, which are TOEFL-IBT  (TOEFL-Internet Based Test) and TOEFL-PBT (TOEFL-Paper Based Test). TOEFL-IBT scores are accepted in universities in Australia, UK, and US, while TOEFL-PBT is usually only used for internal assessment in institutions.

What is IELTS

While TOEFL uses American English as the focus of their proficiency, IELTS uses British English. IELTS is divided into two kinds: General Training and Academic. General Training focuses more on social and workplace context, as it is usually used for job applications or traveling only. Meanwhile in the Academic IELTS, your English proficiency will be measured whether it is suitable for academical environment. The academic skills tested include reading graphs or statistics and making summary of it.

So both of them seem so important, then how do you decide which one to take? Well, the most important thing to consider is which test score the schools you’re enrolling accept. As for TOEFL, it is more accepted by American institutions, while as for IELTS, it is accepted widely overseas, especially in European countries. Each institution has their own preference, so it is worth it to do deeper research before you’re enrolling.

Well, once you’ve decided which test to take, you should immediately know when you’ll be able to take it, what score you’re aiming, and most importantly, how you can prepare for the test.
